Getting Rid Of Gnats & Flies

Facts on Flies, from Standard Exterminating Co.

Gnat & Fly Extermination

There are thousands of species of flies that live in North America alone, feeding on decaying plant and animal matter. They come in a variety of sizes and can be attracted by any sort of garbage or other debris that may be outdoors.

Some of the common flies that affect homes and businesses throughout the area include:

  • Horse Fly: The sturdy flies, also known as a gad fly or ‘green headed monster,’ can range in size from as small as housefly to as large as a bumble bee. The most common species has bright green eyes and a green head. Adults are fast, strong fliers, and may carry animal diseases and can be serious pests to humans and animals. Covering a horse with a blanket or fly net can help protect it from horse fly attacks.
  • House Fly: These are often gray in color, about ¼ of an inch long, and have specially designed mouths that are used to sponge up liquids. Houseflies are unable to eat solid food, and have a life cycle that can bring reproduction every few days. Houseflies exist very well with humans, can be difficult to exterminate, and are capable of carrying over 100 pathogens.
  • Fruit Fly: This is a smaller species, around 1/8 of an inch in length. Many are tan and black, with bright red eyes. Fruit flies eat and leave their eggs on rotting or fermenting fruit.
  • Gnat: Gnats range from 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch long, with their bodies resembling a tiny mosquito having slender wings that are light gray. Flies are attracted to ripened fruit, vegetables, and other food left out on counters.

Many of us see and live with flies every day, so we may not recognize that they can carry some serious parasites, bacteria, and viruses that affect our health, like typhoid, cholera, dysentery, tuberculosis, and parasitic worms, to name a few. Where the flies land, so do these germs.

Ways to help curb the fly problems where you live and work:

  • Flies are generally attracted to trash and garbage cans, or other debris often kept outside the home or building. They gain entry through doors and windows in an effort to find more food. They look for places to breed and lay their eggs, and are attracted to ripened fruit, vegetables, crumbs, etc.
  • Make sure all windows and doors are sealed properly.
  • All screens should be checked regularly to make sure they do not have gashes or holes.
  • Keep garbage cans and compost piles well away from the home or office.
  • Keep all food in the house in sealed containers or in the refrigerator.

Flies can become numerous, especially during the summer months, and can be very difficult to control. It can be difficult to tell where the flies are entering your home. Once inside, it may also be hard to figure out where they are living and breeding. To get the best and safest solution for fly problems, call the Standard Extermination Co. nearest you today.
